10.8. Stopping time
A map {\displaystyle T:\Omega \to \{ 0,1,2,\cdots;\infty \} } is called a stopping time if,
(a)              {\displaystyle \{ T \le n \} = \{ \omega: T(\omega) \le n  \} \in \mathcal{F}_n, \;\; \forall n \le \infty },   equivalently,
(b)              {\displaystyle \{ T = n \} = \{ \omega: T(\omega) = n  \} \in \mathcal{F}_n, \;\; \forall n \le \infty }
Note that {\displaystyle T } can be {\displaystyle \infty }.

Proof of the equivalence of (a) and (b). If {\displaystyle T } has property (a), then
                 {\displaystyle \{ T = n \} = \{ T \le n \} \setminus \{ T \le n-1 \} \in \mathcal{F}_n, \;\; \forall n \le \infty }.
If {\displaystyle T } has property (b), then for {\displaystyle k \le n, \{ T=k \} \in \mathcal{F}_k \subseteq \mathcal{F}_n } and
                     {\displaystyle \{ T \le n \} = \bigcup_{0 \le k \le n} \{ T = k  \} \in \mathcal{F}_n }.
Intuitive idea.  {\displaystyle T } is a time when you can decide to stop playing our game. Whether or not you stop immediately after the {\displaystyle n^{\mathrm{th}} } game depends only on the history up to (and including) time {\displaystyle n : \{ T=n \} \in \mathcal{F}_n }

Definition 5.4.1. A random variable {\displaystyle \tau : \Omega \to [ a,b ] } is called a stopping time with respect to a filtration {\displaystyle \{ \mathcal{F}_t;a \le t \le b \} } if {\displaystyle \{ \omega; \tau(\omega) \le t \} \in \mathcal{F}_t } for all {\displaystyle t \in (a,b) }.

In the definition {\displaystyle b } can be {\displaystyle \infty }. Intuitive speaking, we can think of {\displaystyle \tau } as the time to stop playing game. The condition for {\displaystyle \tau } fo be a stopping time means that the decision to stop playing the game before or at time {\displaystyle t } should be deterined by the information provided by {\displaystyle \mathcal{F}_t }.
