Rudin(1976)から引用します.

4.28 Definition   Let {\displaystyle f } be real on {\displaystyle (a,b) }. Then {\displaystyle f } is said to be monotonically increasing on {\displaystyle (a,b) } if {\displaystyle a \lt x \lt y \lt b } implies {\displaystyle f(x) \le f(y) }. If the last inequality is reversed, we obtain the definition of a monotonically decreasing function. The class of monotonic functions consists of both the increasing and the decreasing functions.

引き続きRudin(1976)から引用します.

6.2 Definition   Let {\displaystyle \alpha } be a monotonically increasing function on {\displaystyle [ a,b ] } (since {\displaystyle \alpha(a) } and {\displaystyle \alpha(b) } are finite, it follows that {\displaystyle \alpha } is bounded on {\displaystyle [ a,b ] }). Corresponding to each partition {\displaystyle P } of {\displaystyle [ a,b ] }, we write
                     {\displaystyle \Delta \alpha_i = \alpha(x_i) -\alpha(x_{i-1}) }.
It is clear that {\displaystyle \Delta \alpha_i \ge 0 }. For any real function {\displaystyle f } which is bounded on {\displaystyle [ a,b ] } we put

                  {\displaystyle U(P,f,\alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^n M_i \Delta \alpha_i },
                  {\displaystyle L(P,f,\alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^n m_i \Delta \alpha_i },

where {\displaystyle M_i,m_i } have the same meaning as in Definition 6.1, and we define

(5)                  {\displaystyle \overline{\int_a^b} f \ d \alpha = \inf \ U(P,f,\alpha) },
(6)                  {\displaystyle \underline{\int_a^b} f \ d \alpha = \sup \ L(P,f,\alpha) },

the {\displaystyle \inf } and {\displaystyle \sup } again being taken over all partitions.
If the left members of (5) and (6) are equal, we denote their common value by

(7)                  {\displaystyle \int_a^b f \ d \alpha }

or sometimes by

(8)                  {\displaystyle \int_a^b f \ d \alpha(x) }.

This is the Riemann-Stieltjes integral (or simply the Stieltjes integral) of {\displaystyle f } with respect to {\displaystyle \alpha }, over {\displaystyle [ a,b ] }.
 If (7) exists, i.e., if (5) and (6) are equal, we say that {\displaystyle f } is integrable with respect to {\displaystyle \alpha }, in the Riemann sense, and write {\displaystyle f \in \mathscr{R}(\alpha) }.
 By taking {\displaystyle \alpha(x)=x }, the Riemann integral is seen to be a special case of the Riemann-Stieltjes integral. Let us mention explicitly, however, that in the general case {\displaystyle \alpha } need not even be continuous.

 A few words should be said about the notation. We prefer (7) to (8), since the letter {\displaystyle x } which appears in (8) adds nothing to the content of (7). It is immaterial which letter we use to represent the so-called “variable of integration”. For instance, (8) is the same as

                     {\displaystyle \int_a^b f(y) \ d \alpha(y) }

The integral depends on {\displaystyle f, \alpha, a } and {\displaystyle b }, but not on the variable of integration, which may as well be omitted.
