Rudin(1976)から引用します.

3.1 Definition   A sequence {\displaystyle \{ p_n \} } in a metric space {\displaystyle X } is said to converge if there is a point {\displaystyle p \in X } with the following property: For every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 } there is an integer {\displaystyle N } such that {\displaystyle n \ge N } implies that {\displaystyle d(p_n,p) \lt \epsilon }. (Here {\displaystyle d } denotes the distance in {\displaystyle X }.)
 In this case we also say that {\displaystyle \{ p_n \} } converges to {\displaystyle p }, or that {\displaystyle p } is the limit of {\displaystyle \{ p_n \} }, and we write {\displaystyle p_n \to p }, or
                    {\displaystyle \lim_{n \to \infty} p_n = p }.
If {\displaystyle \{ p_n \} } does not converge, it is said to diverge

(3.1.a)
For every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 } there is an integer {\displaystyle N } such that {\displaystyle n \ge N } implies that {\displaystyle d(p_n,p) \lt \epsilon }.
(3.1.b)
(3.1.c)
{\displaystyle \forall \epsilon \gt 0 \;\; \exists N \in \mathbb{N} \;\; \forall n \in \mathbb{N} \;\; [ n \ge N \Longrightarrow d(p_n,p) \lt \epsilon ] }.

Rudin(1976)から引用します.

7.1 Definition   Suppose {\displaystyle \{f_n \},n=1,2,3,\ldots, } is a sequence of functions defined on a set {\displaystyle E }, and suppose that the sequence of numbers {\displaystyle \{ f_n(x) \} } converges for every {\displaystyle x \in E }. We can then define a function {\displaystyle f } by

(1)                    {\displaystyle f(x)= \lim_{n \to \infty} f_n (x) \;\;\; (x \in E) }.

Under these circumstances we say that {\displaystyle \{f_n \} } converges on {\displaystyle E } and that {\displaystyle f } is the limit, or the limit function, of {\displaystyle \{f_n \} }. Sometimes we shall use a more descriptive terminology and shall say that “{\displaystyle \{f_n \} } converges to {\displaystyle f } pointwise on {\displaystyle E }” if (1) holds.

7.7 Definition   We say that a sequence of functions {\displaystyle \{f_n \},n=1,2,3,\ldots, } converges uniformly on {\displaystyle E } to a function {\displaystyle f } for every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 } there is an integer {\displaystyle N } such that {\displaystyle n \ge N } implies

(12)                    {\displaystyle | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon }

for all {\displaystyle x \in E }.
 It is clear that every uniformly convergent sequence is pointwise convergent. Quite explicitly, the difference between the two concept is this; If {\displaystyle \{ f_n \} } converges pointwise on {\displaystyle E }, then there exists a function {\displaystyle f} such that, for every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 }, and for every {\displaystyle x \in E }, there is an integer {\displaystyle N }, depending on {\displaystyle \epsilon } and on {\displaystyle x }, such that (12) holds if {\displaystyle n \ge N }; if {\displaystyle \{ f_n \} } converges uniformly on {\displaystyle E }, it is possible, for each {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 }, to find one integer {\displaystyle N } which will do for all {\displaystyle x \in E }

(7.1.a)
For every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 }, and for every {\displaystyle x \in E }, there is an integer {\displaystyle N }, depending on {\displaystyle \epsilon } and on {\displaystyle x }, such that {\displaystyle n \ge N } implies that {\displaystyle | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon }.
(7.1.b)
あらゆる {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 , x \in E} についてある {\displaystyle N=N(\epsilon,x) } を選べば {\displaystyle [ n \ge N \Longrightarrow | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon ] } を成り立たせることができる.
(7.1.c)
{\displaystyle \forall \epsilon \gt 0 \;\; \forall x \in E \;\; \exists N \in \mathbb{N} \;\; \forall n \in \mathbb{N} \;\; [ n \ge N \Longrightarrow | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon ]  }.

(7.7.a)
For every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 } there is an integer {\displaystyle N } such that {\displaystyle n \ge N } implies that {\displaystyle | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon } for all {\displaystyle x \in E }.
(7.7.b)
(7.7.c)
{\displaystyle \forall \epsilon \gt 0 \;\; \exists N \in \mathbb{N} \;\; \forall n \in \mathbb{N} \;\; \forall x \in E \;\; [ n \ge N \ \Longrightarrow | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon ] }.

(7.7.a)'
For every {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 } there is an integer {\displaystyle N } such that {\displaystyle n \ge N } implies that {\displaystyle \sup_{x \in E} | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon }.
(7.7.b)'
あらゆる {\displaystyle \epsilon \gt 0 } についてある {\displaystyle N=N(\epsilon) } を選べば {\displaystyle \left[ n \ge N \Longrightarrow \sup_{x \in E} | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon \right] } を成り立たせることができる.
(7.7.c)'
{\displaystyle \forall \epsilon \gt 0 \;\; \exists N \in \mathbb{N} \;\; \forall n \in \mathbb{N} \;\; \left[ n \ge N \ \Longrightarrow \sup_{x \in E} | f_n(x)-f(x) | \le \epsilon \right] }.

7.9 Theorem   Suppose

                    {\displaystyle \lim_{n \to \infty}f_n(x)=f(x) \;\;\; (x \in E) }.

Put

                    {\displaystyle M_n = \sup_{x \in E} | f_n(x) - f(x) | }.

Then {\displaystyle f_n \to f } uniformly on {\displaystyle E } if and only if {\displaystyle M_n \to 0 } as {\displaystyle n \to \infty }.
